Monday October 26, 2020

Louisville ASHRAE November Chapter Meeting (Virtual)
Wednesday, November 18, 2020

Please join us for the fourth chapter meeting of the 2020-2021 ASHRAE year!

This chapter meeting will be held virtually

Presenter: Larry J. Fisher, Life Member ASHRAE

Larry is the retired owner and President of ECT Services, a Temperature Controls design and installation company based in Louisville, KY.  He has been involved with ASHRAE Technical Committee 1.4, Control Theory and Application for over 25 years.  Larry is past member of ASHRAE Board of Directors, served as your Region VII DRC, and currently serves as voting member on Foundation, Publishing and Education, Government Affairs, and Nominating.  He has received ASHRAE’s Distinguished and Exceptional Service Awards. He has been a speaker with controls as the focus at numerous ASHRAE Conferences. His expertise during his 35+ years in controls includes the understanding of quality installation that result in a more sustainable building for the future. His passion is education for owners, engineers, and installers that result in a well-maintained mechanical system for the life of a building.

Topic: Best Practices for Installing DDC Systems

This will be an abbreviated version from the 3 hour instructor led course that Larry debuted at the 2019 Winter Meeting in Orlando.

What is interesting is this course DOES NOT discuss sequences of operation, programming, or software. The purpose is to focus on the physical design, the engineering specs (instructions) of the physical design, the installation procedures and accountability and expectations of the team required to design and install sustainable controls for the life of a building.

A facility’s direct digital controls (DDCs) form a living, breathing system that an owner will use throughout the life of the building. However, many control systems do not work as designed on “Day One,” much less after two to three years of use. Adding to the complexity are subcontractors, who often do not routinely install control systems, as well as installing contractors, who have broad discretion to determine aspects of how controls are installed. In addition, many manufacturers sell DDCs and components but provide little information on installation practices or quality-control guidelines.

If standardized and quality installations are promoted, the short and long-term success of control systems will be greatly improved.

This program will discuss information to ensure uniformity for consultants, contractors, and code officials. The program will specifically benefit consulting engineers, DDC design integration engineers, commissioning authorities, and contractors who install DDC Systems.
